Meet the Artists: Ashley & Tara

We are busy preparing for our debut in August at The Joyce in NYC and aside from the excitement of heading to the Big Apple we are so thrilled with the artists that will be joining us. So for the next few weeks we will be posting updates about these esteemed artists of DWDT dancing at the Joyce! Today we bring you Ashley Lynn Gilfix and Tara Lee.

Ashley Lynn Gilfix

Ashley Lynn Gilfix is originally from the Chicago area, where she received her pre-professional training from Ms. Sherry Moray.  She performed with the Alabama Ballet, under Wes Chapman, prior to joining Ballet Austin in 2002.  As a dancer with Ballet Austin, Ashley has premiered many works by Stephen Mills and toured to Italy, Slovenia, Puerto Rico, The Joyce, and The Kennedy Center –dancing in collaboration with The Suzanne Farrell Ballet in 2008, and most recently as a part of Dance Across America III.  In September 2013, she will tour Israel with Ballet Austin, performing Mills’ acclaimed Light: The Holocaust and Humanity Project.  Ashley has danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Hamlet, Cinderella, Swan Lake, Coppelia, La Sylphide, The Magic Flute, Romeo & Juliet, and Giselle, as well as in works by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Dwight Rhoden, Mats Ek, Nicolo Fonte, Thang Dao, Gina Patterson, Loni Landon, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and Dominic Walsh. She has been a featured guest artist with Dominic Walsh Dance Theater since 2010.

I first worked with Ashley in 2010 when creating a new work for Ballet Austin; she was the first one I cast.  Since then, she has danced with DWDT in tours to Dallas, at the Winspeare Theater in 2010 and to Santa Fe last summer, as well as our Miller Outdoor Theatre last September.  I have always admired Ashley’s focus and professionalism in simultaneously obtaining the many layers of the work on both a physical and psychological plane.  On stage she is present, consistent and a joy to watch.  I’m so pleased she can join the company again for our debut at The Joyce. ~ Dominic Walsh

Tara Lee

Tara Lee grew up in Connecticut, where she trained with Donna Bonasera of Connecticut Dance Theatre. She has been a member of Joffrey II, Ballet British Columbia, New Orleans Ballet Theatre, and the Atlanta Ballet,  her artistic home for 17 seasons to date.  Tara has performed works by Wayne McGregor, Ohad Naharin, Crystal Pite, James Kudelka, Jorma Elo, Helen Pickett, Gina Patterson, John Alleyne, and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Principal roles include those in John McFall’s Swan Lake and Firebird,  Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly, Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella  and Three Preludes, Michael Pink’s Romeo & Juliet and Dracula, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room and Princess and the Goblin, David Bintley’s Carmina Burana, Christopher Hampson’s Rite of Spring, Mark Godden’s The Magic Flute, Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena,  Lauri Stallings’ big, George Balanchine’s Serenade, and Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring.

Tara has choreographed three pieces for Atlanta Ballet, most recently Pavo, which premiered in May 2012.  She will present a new work for the company in May of 2014.

I have only known Tara for a short time having met her in May of this year while Domenico and I were in Atlanta. We were invited  to guest with my dear friend, John McFall’s Atlanta Ballet.  The company’s repertoire is wonderfully vast and current, and Tara transitioned through several dance works adapting to each style with absolute grace and confidence.  I look forward to working with her, as she makes her DWDT debut in our New York City run at The Joyce. ~ Dominic Walsh
