DOMINIC WALSH DANCE THEATER CELEBRATES 2007-2008 SEASON
WITH DEBUT FROM ICONIC CHOREOGRAPHER JIRI KYLIAN
This is a very exciting time for Dominic Walsh Dance Theater! The company has reached some important milestones, and it has been amazing to see what can happen in such a short time with passionate, creative, and skillful people working together. With our 2007-2008 season, we will celebrate these accomplishments and look to a brilliant future.

The highlight of our sixth season will be the debut of Double You by one of the most iconic choreographers of our time, Jiri Kylian. Created in 1994, this virtuosic solo is one of the most recent Kylian works obtained by any company in America.
Of the world premiere performance of Double You, The New York Times wrote:
“Then to a recording of the Allemande from Bach's Partita No. 4 in D (BWV 828) for harpsichord, he
continued to dance, sometimes cautiously, but at
other times with a vigor that suggested he was
conquering obstacles. By the time he pulled the
curtains shut again, the solo had become a tribute
to the courage with which one faces life's
tribulations.”

DWDT is honored to present Double You as part of our February program that will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the company's premiere performance. For this celebratory program, I will create a new work utilizing the music of Mozart. Houston audiences will also have an opportunity to see a pas de deux from my Orfeo ed Euridice, a full-length ballet created for New National Theatre, Tokyo.
After the premiere of this ballet, critic Ryoko Sasaki wrote:
“It is a sophisticated excellent work with meditation and emotion moderately blended with each other.”
And critic Akiko Tachiki said:
“The choreography in which techniques of classic ballet and contemporary dance fuse
was full of deformations and twists, and sparkled with unique originality.”
I am happy to announce that the Japanese ballerina for whom the ballet was created, Hana Sakai, will travel to Houston to perform this piece. A revival of Mauro Bigonzetti’s provocative Pression will conclude this very special program.
Another highlight of the season will be the October world premiere of my version of The Sleeping Beauty set to Tchaikovsky’s renowned score. Only in fairy tales are we provided with a world where reality and fantasy co-exist, and morals, metaphors and mystery swim into the unconscious heart and mind. As a choreographer and director, this kind of canvas provides a platform to take well-known stories and explore a new focus in and around them. It feels as if I am painting a new portrait of a historic subject.
For E_Merging II, our third and final program of the season, DWDT will debut new creations for the company dancers by two young artistic directors, myself and Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramirez Sansano. Houston audiences are sure to love Ramirez Sansano’s athletic and inventive movement vocabulary.
And do not miss our free performances of Fall for Dominic Walsh Dance Theater at Miller Outdoor Theatre in September. This dynamic program featuring some of the most popular works recently added to the company’s repertoire will be a great way to kick-off our stellar 2007-2008 season.
